Designing the Alliance for an Effective Coaching/Development Experience

Often during my coaching consultation calls, the perspective client acknowledges that they “don’t know what to do with or how to use a coach” or that they are not sure what is required of them during the coaching experience.

Coaching is a form of development to support and guide a client in achieving a specific personal or professional goal.  The coaching experience is customized to the client’s development needs.

The concept of designed alliance is often used in coaching to set the stage for a relationship that empowers clients to be the most successful as they make changes in their work and personal lives. For example, a client might suggest the most effective ways for his coach to support him when he’s feeling scared, resistant or stuck. Once the alliance has been designed, it’s important to update it as individual needs and desires change. Below is excerpt from one of my client’s experience.

“As someone who has generally always been open to feedback, self-improvement and growth, I was excited to begin my coaching journey with Daphne. I was particularly interested in guidance and tools on how to successfully navigate the corporate world as a “young,” confident black woman and solidifying my “brand” as a resourceful thought leader within my company. Much of my coaching engagement has focused on different types of balance: being mindful of my presence and how I show up at work, while also remaining authentic to who I am and my core value; how to be a team player and leader without taking on others’ responsibilities and burdens; how to manage difficult and/or underperforming staff, while also trying to motivate and encourage them towards success; being mindful of my emotional investments at work, while trying not allow myself to feel overwhelmed or overburdened by project/assignments. It’s all still a work in progress, but the coaching experience has been a valuable component in helping me find the balance I’ve been seeking.” Naomi, Managing Director

There are several reasons/situations that can be supported by partnering with a coach.  In a recent Korn Ferry study – the 10 leadership challenges coached most often by position/level range from self-awareness to building effective teams.  See the study
